Dexamethasone: Pharmacology

Like other glucocorticoids, dexamethasone acts on the metabolism (in particular on the carbohydrates) and it inhibits the adrenal cortex through feedback on the hypothalamus and pituitary; it also has strong anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive action. The effect on sodium and potassium is negligible, but it does cause calcium loss and osteoporosis like other corticoids. The effect of glucocorticoids are based largely on the interaction with intracellular receptors that cause the synthesis of specific proteins.
